Tyndale Bulletin Full Text of Past Issues

Исследователям – радоваться! Tyndale House открыл свободный доступ к Tyndale Bulletin. Правда, пока что можно читать статьи (в формате doc & pdf) журналов с 1956 по 2005 гг. (http://www.tyndalehouse.com/Bulletin.htm)

Thanks go to Dr Ted Hildebrandt of Gordon College who carried out the huge task of producing full text articles from scans of the complete back-issues of Tyndale Bulletin. Anyone who has used an OCR program on a single sheet of English can imagine the complexity of converting an academic text with specialist vocabulary and scattered Hebrew and Greek. Despite his best efforts, some errors may have slipped through (though we haven't found any yet - tell us if you spot any). So if you are citing it in a publication, please also consult the printed copy or the scans at ATLAS. >>>

Google's University Search

В Google также можно производить поиск веб-сайтам университетов (http://www.google.com/options/universities.html). Сегодня я сделал заявку на регистрацию в этом списке Донецкого христианского университета. Посмотрим, как отреагирует Google ;-)

Google's University Search enables you to narrow your search to a specific school website. Try it for things like admissions information, course schedules, or alumni news. To get into your target school, just click the name below. >>>

Search and find magazines on Google Book Search

Теперь в поисковой системе http://books.google.com можно производить поиск по периодическим изданиям. Для этого нужно войти в меню Advanced Book Search (возле поисковой строки справа) и на строке Content выбрать Magazines.

The word "magazine" is derived from the Arabic word "makhazin," meaning storehouse. Since Daniel Defoe published the world's first English magazine back in 1704, millions of magazines catering to nearly every imaginable taste have been created and consumed, passed from person to person in cafes, barber shops, libraries, and homes around the world. If you're wondering what cars people drove in the eighties or what was in fashion thirty years ago, there's a good chance that you'll find that answer in a magazine. Yet few magazine archives are currently available online. >>>

Academic Phrases – And What They Really Mean

I got these “Academic Phrases…” from one of my best friends. Thanks a lot! We do need to learn them by heart fot getting our PhDs :-)

The following list of phrases and their definitions might help you understand the mysterious language of science and medicine. These special phrases are also applicable to anyone working on a Ph.D. dissertation or academic paper anywhere!

  • "It has long been known"... I didn't look up the original reference.
  • "Three of the samples were chosen for detailed study"... The other results didn't make any sense.
  • "Typical results are shown"... This is the prettiest graph.
  • "In my experience"... once.
  • "In case after case"... twice.
  • "In a series of cases"... thrice.
  • "It is believed that"... I think.
  • "It is generally believed that"... A couple of others think so, too.
  • "Correct within an order of magnitude"... Wrong.
  • "According to statistical analysis"... Rumor has it.
  • "A statistically oriented projection of the significance of these findings"... A wild guess.
  • "It is clear that much additional work will be required before a complete understanding of this phenomenon occurs"... I don't understand it.
  • "After additional study by my colleagues"... They don't understand it either.
  • "Thanks are due to Joe Blotz for assistance with the experiment and to Cindy Adams for valuable discussions"... Mr. Blotz did the work and Ms. Adams explained to me what it meant.
  • "It is hoped that this study will stimulate further investigation in this field"... I quit.

More on the Theology of Mentoring

Mentoring is not devoid of theological resources, but few of them have been brought to light. Some years ago at one of our early national mentoring conferences here at Denver Seminary, Dr. James Houston observed that without theological underpinnings, mentoring would endure the same fate as all other passing ministry fads. I continue to argue that mentoring is in fact one of the most theologically defensible and non-negotiable forms of Christian ministry. It is not at all new; merely in recovery after having been lost to the fragmenting forces of Western society. So, in order that mentoring may be seen for what it is and not end up in the storage shed of outdated ministry programs, I suggest another theological pylon. >>>
