Newsletter for Evangelical Theological Faculty (ETF) Fall 2009

Greetings from the president
By Patrick Nullens

image A new academic year has started, and the once so quiet monastery has become a busy beehive. We recently finished our yearly doctoral week with 50 doctoral students from all over the world. In the Masters and bachelor program we expect to greet 27 new students. This year we are also launching a new program called the Summer University where there are 9 students enrolled.

Education is a long term investment, and this does not fit into our fast modern culture, where we want to see results quickly. Even political leaders do not think further than their own mandate. But in the Bible, especially in the Old Testament, we see that God acts very differently. He works through many generations and takes time for change. But something that takes a long time also costs a lot of money.

The financing of the ETF consists of three parts: the student tuition, government support, and the donations from our supporters. The tuition of the students is not only collected in finances, but also in house chores where the students either help in the library our with the maintenance work. This cooperation with the students distinguishes ETF from other European universities, because we not only believe in an academic and professional progress, but a in a symbiosis between spiritual formation and academic work. In this respect we seem closer to the old monastery universities from the middle Ages. Also this year we again ask for your help both in prayer and in donations, as the long marathon is a costly affair.

With much enthusiasm we stand in the starting blocks, hoping that you will run this marathon with us.

Linked in Christ,
Patrick Nullens, President of ETF
